The cosmopolitan country town of Orange, in the Central West of NSW, is a veritable food bowl brimming with fresh primary produce, home-style providores, organic suppliers, acclaimed boutique wines, exciting Farmers’ Markets and multi-award winning restaurants.
Nestled around the fertile base of snow-peaked Mount Canobolas, the region boasts a uniquely cool climate and many elevated cropping areas well suited to growing fruit, vegetables and wine grapes. Due to these special growing conditions, Orange has always been at the heart of the NSW’s apple, stone fruit, fig and cherry seasons.
Recently, the area has grown from strength to strength to become one of Australia’s premiere foodie destinations. The introduction of hazelnut groves, a venison farm, berry farms, free range egg farms and trufferiesjust to name a few has helped to put Orange, and its restaurants, on the map. A commitment to preserving heirloom produce and supporting sustainable, local eating means that Orange cannot be missed by any discerning foodies. Excitedly, it isn’t just the locals who believe so - the region was awarded the coveted Vogue Entertaining + Travel Award for "THE REGIONAL AWARD" in 2009. While both Racine @ La Colline and Lolli Redini have both received a coveted SMH Good Food Awards Chefs Hat in 2012.
Just 3.5 hours drive from Sydney, it is easy to make your way over the Blue Mountains to feast on Orange’s local produce, stock up on local Orange wine and soak up the country calm by a fire in one of the city’s boutique B&Bs. Of course, don’t forget to drop into A Slice of Orange to indulge in a fresh Bills Beans coffee, enjoy a locally baked Racine Kitchen snack and pick up a custom picnic hamper before exploring the sites, or to fill your boot before the drive home.

Orange is fortunate to experience very distinct and beautiful seasons. Autumn is stunning, winter regularly brings sprinklings of snow and spring is a show of blossoms and flowers. Our regional produce calendar is a great reference tool for what fruit and veg will be in season at these different times of year. From berries, apples, figs, heirloom pumpkins, quinces, eggplant and rocket – it all grows here. Thank you to The Farm Gate for their seasonal calendar.
